I purchased a Fabriano "Leporello" sketchbook while traveling in Europe in February 2020.
The book itself is roughly 4.5"X6.5" and unfolds almost 7 feet.
Always fascinated with the narrow streets and alleyways of places like Venice and Prague, I originally wanted to do just regular sketches from my travels. But traveling in a group, with a packed schedule, I often don't get to start drawing until I get back home and by then, the idea has lost its luster. So instead I decided to make a storybook which was one continuous illustration and incorporate some buildings from my travels. But I also wanted to capture the feeling of mystery and intrigue I've felt as a tourist.
Some of the artists that inspired the style of art: Edward Gorey, Richard Sala, Moebius, Giovanni Battista Piranesi.
